Dr. Julia Challinor

Dr. Julia Challinor, RN, PhD, MS in Education and MS in Med Anthropology, is a graduate of Wheelock College, Boston, MA; San Francisco State University, CA; the University of California, San Francisco, CA; and the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. 

A former teacher, Dr Challinor was the Educational Liaison for children with cancer and those who had survived their disease at the University of California, San Francisco from 1993-2003. During 1994-2006, as a nurse, she also headed A Tomorrow for Children Foundation and worked in partnership with paediatric oncology centres in Latin America. She currently collaborates with the paediatric oncology unit at the Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Institute in Delhi, India to advance nursing leadership and improve nursing care. She also partners with the Ministry of Health in Peru, a focus country for the WHO Global Childhood Cancer Initiative, to address nursing strategic planning goals. Dr. Challinor is the Secretary General-Elect for the International Society of Paediatric Oncology. In general, Dr. Challinor partners with nurses caring for children and adolescents with cancer across low- and middle-income countries to improve nursing practice while acknowledging local realities, limitations, and possibilities.

Talk Summary:
Childhood cancer is rare, although increasing, and generally distinct from adult cancers. In high-income countries, survival rates can reach >85% for some cancers; yet, in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), successful treatments are challenged by local realities. This lecture addresses the nursing care of a developmentally diverse patient population, with complex needs and varying family needs and resources. Challenges and strengths of the nursing role across the world to provide effective care whether the goal is cure or palliative care until the end of life will also be considered.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lecture the attendee will be able to:

  1. Identify at least 1 key difference between childhood cancers and adult cancers.
  2. List at least 3 paediatric-specific challenges in nursing care.
  3. Describe 3 important aspects of the nursing care of adolescents with cancer.
  4. Summarise the physiological and psychosocial late effects of childhood cancer survivors.
