Dr. Isabel White

Dr. Isabel White is an experienced research active clinician, in cancer nursing and psychosexual therapy, who has worked in supportive care and psychological support in oncology within the university, public health care and charitable (third) sectors. 

She works collaboratively to promote practice development, training, clinical audit, service evaluation and research initiatives that aim to enhance quality of care and services for people experiencing the sexual consequences of cancer and its treatment.

Isabel’s clinical and research interests include the development and evaluation of sexual wellbeing assessment methods in practice, health professional training interventions and the clinical management of sexual consequences. 

She works to raise the profile of this neglected aspect of cancer survivorship within practice, workforce education, research and policy for people living with and beyond cancer.

Talk Summary:
This talk outlines the most common male and female sexual difficulties that arise as a direct or indirect consequence of cancer diagnosis and treatment. Factors affecting clinical assessment and health professional/patient communication about treatment-induced sexual difficulties will then be explored. The biomedical, behavioural and other therapeutic strategies available to improve sexual rehabilitation after cancer treatment will also be addressed in detail. Finally, theoretical, practical and evidence-based approaches are combined, thus offering an integrated approach to comprehensively address this often neglected yet important aspect of cancer survivorship.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of this lecture the attendee will be able to:

  1. Define the most common treatment-induced sexual difficulties affecting men and women living with and beyond cancer.
  2. Consider the socio-cultural, individual and health care system factors that adversely affect oncology professional’s ability to discuss and support those experiencing sexual consequences of cancer and its treatment.
  3. Outline the biomedical and behavioural strategies that can assist in the integrated management of common male and female sexual difficulties after cancer treatment.
