Lecture Summary

Interest in leadership and how to build leadership capacity in health care has been growing over the past 2 decades. This is because effective leadership is an essential element for implementing reforms and shaping the culture of our organizations. A health organization who have effective leaders within will flourish, but importantly, one does not become a leader because you get a job at a certain level of the organization. Leadership and management are different things, although the words are often used interchangeably. This workshop explores the concept that leadership is a capacity that we all have, and that we can begin our journey to becoming an effective leader without any special role or title. The LEADS in a Caring Environment leadership framework LEADS_Brochure_EN_Final.indd (leadscollaborative.ca) is used to walk the learner through the levels of leadership capacity, but importantly it all starts with “Leading Self”. Finally as a means to understanding one’s self and taking concrete steps to lead one’s self, the learners are encouraged to do a free on-line personality quiz Free personality test, type descriptions, relationship and career advice | 16Personalities to identify their personality traits. Understanding yourself is the first step on the path to being a leader!
