Lecture Summary

Our clinical acumen is a powerful, and often underappreciated tool to identify patients with an infection and a high disease severity (academically referred to as sepsis). Severe disease can be recognized by the following clinical findings: the first impression, altered mental state, diaphoresis or profuse sweating, tachypnea as well as the work and type of breathing, tachycardia and reduced skin perfusion such as prolonged capillary refill time and skin mottling (reflecting centralization), as well as in severe cases petechiae and other skin indicators of disseminated intravascular coagulation.
