Lecture Summary

The options for treatment of cancer have increased dramatically over the past 15 years based on positive results from therapeutic clinical trials. Supportive care strategies and all aspects of cancer care have improved based on the efforts of researchers and their staff, and patient participation in clinical trials. Understanding the types of clinical trials and barriers to clinical trial enrollment provides oncology nurses with opportunities to clarify uncertainties surrounding clinical trials while supporting and encouraging enrollment when appropriate. This presentation will provide information that will facilitate the understanding of clinical trials, ultimately improving clinical outcomes for patients with cancer.
