Lecture Summary

Effective communication is often cited when individuals and teams perform well and is found lacking when adverse events occur. There is a diverse set of events covered under ‘communication’ – with patients, within and between teams, in high and lower acuity situations, and when there is conflict. Communication is often just a symptom - of the health of team culture, relationships, psych safety and shared mental models In this session, we discuss key principles for clinicians communicating in critical care environments. We describe how effective communication is reliant upon team culture, relationships, psychological safety, and shared mental models. We provide examples of communication events like briefings, referrals and managing conflict that enhance individual and team performance.
