Damage control laparotomy and resuscitation represent important approaches in the management of trauma patients with severe abdominal injuries. The intensivist plays a critical role in the damage control process by leading the resuscitation of the critically ill patient prior to their definitive surgery. This talk reviews: the principles of damage control surgery and resuscitation, practical aspects of managing an open abdomen in the intensive care unit and complications related to the open abdomen.
