Lecture Summary

Successful extubation is a critical part of advanced airway management. This lecture will review the relevant definitions, epidemiology, criteria, management strategies and recent supporting literature for extubation in the critically ill patient population. Extubation in the critically ill is a challenging and high risk situation. Significant morbidity and mortality are frequently associated with failed extubation. It should be kept in mind that extubation is an elective procedure. Accordingly, careful patient assessment, planning and management strategies should be employed when optimal conditions have been achieved.
