Lecture Summary

The field of hematology nursing is continuously growing due to major and ongoing discoveries and advancements on the diagnostic tests and procedures, as well as for newer targeted treatments for patients diagnosed with hematologic malignancies. Nurses encounter new terminology and a load of information that grows immensely every day. This presentation discusses the basics on hematopoietic stem cells and their function, the concept of hematopoiesis, and the ways that relate hematologic malignancies to their respective cell of origin, their conventional and up-to-date diagnosis, treatment, and nursing care. The key to provide safe and effective nursing care planning to these patients is to engage in acquiring evidence-based knowledge and multidisciplinary education.
