This presentation reviews terms associated with loss, grief and bereavement associated with serious illness care. Providing care for patients, families and communities experiencing loss is a key domain of national palliative care guidelines and a key responsibility of health care professionals. The presentation also distinguishes between types of grief, the grief experienced by clinicians in their own lives and practice and interventions used to respond to grief such as listening and presence.
