Lecture Summary

This presentation discusses the modern management of acute atrial fibrillation in the emergency department. Using the Canadian approach and guidelines, we strongly encourage cardioversion in the ED by drug or electric shock, followed by early discharge home. Usually there is no need to consult cardiology or anesthesia in the ED and no need to admit these patients as the vast majority can be quickly and safely returned to normal sinus rhythm. We review the optimal approach to assessment, rate control, rhythm control, stroke prevention, and disposition.
