Lecture Summary

Globally, the number and proportion of older adults with cancer is steadily increasing. While developed regions have already seen important increases in cancer incidence at older ages, less developed regions will be considerably impacted in the coming years. These increases call for health care professionals worldwide who are working in cancer care to identify and address age-related changes that impact, and are impacted by, cancer and cancer treatment. When these age-related changes are not appropriately addressed, age-related disparities in cancer care may occur. These disparities may be addressed by recognizing the heterogeneity and varying levels of frailty among older adults, particularly through the use of geriatric assessment and management. Oncology nurses are uniquely positioned to identify and address age-related concerns in cancer care.
