Lecture Summary

This talk addresses the importance of research literacy for cancer nurses. It draws on evidence to demonstrate patient, system and community level benefits of research informed nursing care, and highlights the risks to patient experience and outcomes when care is not underpinned by evidence. The talk provides examples of the enormity of practice issues where cancer nurses can generate new, implement existing, and evaluate impact of research informed care. Importantly, it also highlights the risk to nursing’s visibility when our care lacks research evidence of its impact and contribution to patient and community health outcomes, and to the efficiency of care delivery. Practical ways in which cancer nurses can begin to engage with and lead evidence based care are presented, and organisations and resources available to support cancer nurses to engage in research are discussed.
