Lecture Summary

Pediatric bones are more pliable than adult bones, leading to several specific injuries Growth plates can make diagnosis of fractures on radiograph challenging and can lead to pediatric-specific physeal fractures which can impede growth. Depending on age and mechanism, there are certain fractures common in different anatomic areas. For example, supracondylar fractures are the most common elbow fractures in children and occur of a continuum of displacement requiring only splinting and outpatient referral to admission and urgent surgery. These different patterns, recognition, and management will be discussed in this lecture on pediatric orthopedic care in the emergency department or urgent care.
