Lecture Summary

Sedation is commonly used in ICU and for most of our patients, minimising sedation provides clinical benefit. This lecture discusses some of the methods used to assess for pain and review the adequacy of sedation, with pharmacological considerations of common analgesic and sedative infusions being a major focus. We will also discuss potential PK/PD changes in the critically ill and what features the ideal sedative might possess.
