Vasoactive agents are commonly used in the ICU for treatment of varying forms of shock. This however is fraught with uncertainties considering the complex nature of circulatory physiology and the varying effects of these drugs. This lecture addresses the bare basics on some of the commonly used vasoactive drugs with a detailing of how they get to exert their respective actions. This knowledge is important for the rational choice of agent for a given disease state.
