Lecture Summary

This presentation will review radiobiology and the general effect of ionising radiation on DNA., the cellular response, and the resulting effects on body tissues and organs. The principles of radiobiology, the 5 “R’s, will be discussed as the basis for clinical radiobiology, dose fractionation, and the therapeutic ratio. Radiation effect/side effects are an accumulation of radiation dose over time and need to be understood by nurses in order to provide appropriate patient education and care.

Target Audience

Oncology nurses
Trainee oncology doctors
General practitioners

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to:

  • To understand the mechanisms of ionizing radiation on body tissue
  • To understand the difference between radiosensitive and radioresistant tissues
  • To understand the 5 “R”s of radiobiology
