Lecture Summary

Unplanned ICU readmission is a widely accepted measure of quality of care in Intensive Care Units (ICU). It is described as admission to intensive care of a patient previously admitted to the ICU (index ICU admission) during the same hospital encounter. ICU readmissions are associated with increased short-term morbidity and mortality including prolonged lengths of stay and increased resource use. The risk of early ICU readmission may be attributable to individual patients’ characteristics but also are often associated with care processes. The prediction of ICU readmission is challenging. The impact of ICU readmissions on the outcomes of patients in low-and-middle income countries (LMICs) seems to be relevant, however the evidence regarding the burden of ICU readmission in LMICs is still limited.

Target Audience

Critical Care Doctors
Experienced Critical Care Nurses

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to:

  • Understand the burden of unplanned ICU readmission
  • Recognise the risks associated with unplanned ICU readmission
  • Know if patients at risk for readmission can be identified early to improve outcome
  • Describe the implications of ICU readmissions in LMIC settings

None.
