Swallowing safety and efficiency are important components in the swallow process. A swallowing disorder or impairment, termed dysphagia can occur in patients admitted to the ICU. This talk explores the definition, aetiology and impact of dysphagia in the ICU with examples of dysfunction across the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing. Specifically, the impact of dysphagia is explored through the ICF framework. Assessment and management of swallowing function are discussed with reference to the literature. Finally, key messages are shared for all healthcare professionals to apply in their own settings.
