In this talk, I will give a short summary of the background for targeted temperature management/hypothermia after cardiac arrest. I give a brief summary of the latest clinical trials, recent systematic reviews, the current treatment recommendations and also a thought on future research.

  • Understand how the type of temperature management delivered in clinical practice for cardiac arrest differ from animal experimental studies, case reports of accidental hypothermia and cardiac arrest, and deep hypothermic circulatory arrest during surgery
  • Discuss recent trials on temperature management after cardiac arrest (will need some additional reading to answer thoroughly)
  • Relate and discuss rationale for the differences between recent ILCOR recommendations (2021) from the initial recommendations (2003)
