Lecture Summary

In this talk, a seven-step approach to teaching procedural skills is applied to tracheal intubation. By using the seven-step approach we can transform ourselves from expert clinicians to expert clinician-educators, making learning easier for our trainees. The argument is made that the traditional approach of novices practising on real patients is outdated, and practical suggestions are made for accelerating novices towards competence, including the routine use of video laryngoscopy for training. This systematic approach improves the experience of airway training for the trainee, the teacher, the rest of the care team and most importantly, the patient.
