Lecture Summary

This presentation covers the principles and equipment used in temporary ventricular pacing. Included are recognition of paced rhythms and the ECG appearances in the four main complicaitons: Failure to Capture, Failure to Pace, Failure to Sense and Oversensing. Patient and equipment factors contributing to these complications are discussed, along with corrective actions for each.

Target Audience

Critical Care Nurses
Critical Care Doctors

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of this activity, you should be able to:

  • Understand the patient and pacemaker factors which influence pacing capture, and the corrective actions required for failure to capture
  • Describe the patient and pacemaker factors which influence sensing of intrinsic rhythm, and the corrective actions for failure to sense and oversensing
  • Appreciate the corrective actions to restore an electrical circuit when there is the complication ‘failure to pace’
