Dr Naomi Hammond, RN, PhD
Operations Lead and Senior Research Fellow in the Critical Care Division of The George Institute
Dr Naomi Hammond is the Operations Lead and Senior Research Fellow in the Critical Care Division of The George Institute, Sydney. She also works part-time as the Intensive Care Clinical Research Manager at Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney. Naomi holds a number of other appointments including Conjoint Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine, University of New South Wales; Vice-Chair of the ANZICS-CTG Intensive Care Research Coordinator Interest Group; Senior Research Fellow with the Australian Sepsis Network; Founding steering committee member of the Asia Pacific Sepsis Alliance (APSA); an Editorial Board Member for Australian Critical Care Journal; and sits on the Australian College of Critical Care Nurses (ACCCN) National Research Advisory Panel.
Naomi is a nurse researcher with a strong academic record that includes over 50 publications, numerous scholarships and awards, and funding totalling over 6Million AUD. Naomi’s main research interests include fluid resuscitation, sepsis, fever management, knowledge translation and implementation research, health economics, and long-term outcomes post critical illness. Naomi has experience supervising and mentoring medical trainees, nursing staff, PhD, Masters and medical students in both the clinical and academic environment.
Additional to Naomi’s academic portfolio, she has extensive clinical trials operational management experience including finance, regulatory, personnel, project and program management in a clinical and NGO environment.

Over the last two decades, there have been several landmark fluid resuscitation trials published. These trials have provided evidence that the type of intravenous fluids we choose for resuscitation can impact important patient-centred outcomes. This presentation will look at what we know from these trials focused on fluid resuscitation in sepsis and septic shock; specifically, an overview of the principles of fluid resuscitation, types of fluids, review the fluid resuscitation evidence and describe changes in fluid resuscitation practices over time.
By the end of this lecture the attendee will be able to:
- Define sepsis and septic shock and the key clinical considerations
- Understand the principles of fluid resuscitation and the types of fluid available
- Describe the key fluid resuscitation literature specific to sepsis
- Describe changes in fluid resuscitation practices over time
