Professor Philip Lumb held several academic and administrative appointments at prestigious medical facilities prior to moving to the the University of Southern California in 2001. Former positions include vice-chairman and associate professor of Anaesthesiology at Duke University, chairman and professor of Anaesthesiology at Albany Medical College and chairman and Eric A. Walker Professor of Anaesthesiology at Penn State-Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. Other notable previous appointments include president and secretary-general of the World Federation of Societies of Intensive and Critical Care Medicine (now World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care) and chancellor and secretary general of the American College of Critical Care Medicine in which he is a Master Fellow.
He received the Handcock Prize of the Royal College of Surgeons (London) and the Hilmer Burchardi Award from the Society of Critical Care Anaesthesiologists. Prof. Lumb has been honoured for his devotion to the science and practice of anaesthesia. He is a member of several renowned professional societies, including the American Society of Anaesthesiologists, the International Anaesthesia Research Society, the Association of University Anaesthesiologists, the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the World Federation of Intensive and Critical Care.
